I am a caged bird
I am a bird in a room of sunflower painted walls
A window my world, opens to a slice of the sky
I am a caged bird,
Living in a house oh so very tall
My wings glisten in the dawn,
They are broken alas! I can't fly.
As the sky turns charcoal, the moon serenades under my cage
My heart yearns to travel over unknown seas, lands unseen
I am a caged bird,
My songs never breach the bars of rage
My tunes never float above snowy clouds
Freedom, I have never seen.
When raindrops fall on summer-parched lands
And flowers bloom in their glorious display
I am a caged bird,
For me time never flies, but still stands
Dreams lay wounded, alone I weep
No companion to play.
Then one day down I will drop and be still
No wind beneath my wing
No tunes of love to sing
No life ever lived, flight ever taken
I will be a caged bird forlorn and forgotten.
I am a bird, born not to be a slave
I will fight, I will rise to fly
I will no longer be a bird in a cage
Tomorrow I shall set free
I have to be free.
