She stepped out of the cab, smiled at the chauffeur and said "Keep the change". As the bright yellow cab passed by her, she tried to sneak at its glass window one last time to make sure her hair was in place. Sam loved her curls. He always waved her fringes away, cupped her face in his hands only to plant those amazing kisses all over her face. Gosh she missed them all these years!
It has been twenty years since they had last met. It has been twenty years that she had not been in this city- the City of Joy. It has been twenty years but still this place feels the same. This part of the city has a certain tranquility surrounding it, even the breeze keeps its silence. Built on the bank of Ganges, it paves its way all through the British Raj Ghats to the famous Vivekananda Bridge.
She walked past the road to get closer to the river. Memories fluttered across her mind as she saw young couples chirping all over the place. A gust of wind swept past her, dismantling her cream colored attire. She caught hold of her scarf and clad it over. She had dressed exactly the way he always wanted to see her. This time of the year is really hot in here, but this time of the day made it feel better. She took a seat, facing the bank.
Twenty years is a long time, her hairs have greyed, her skin wrinkled, she has aged. Day in and day out she has been thinking about him for the last twenty years - how has he been, where has he been, how did he look now, and most importantly will he remember this day and come to meet her. Twenty years back when they had to part away from each other, they had decided to meet once again in their life - twenty years from then and there she was on that day waiting for him.
"What lovely days they were!" ,She thought and smiled at herself. Sam and Pearl were the talk of the town. They had a roaring affair of nine months only to part ways for inevitable reasons. Sometimes only love is not enough to keep two persons together. Both of them had moved on but she always had been thinking about him, eagerly waiting for these years to pass, rather lived these twenty years only to be able to meet him on this day and to feel that magic again.
Time passed. The sun had set, the crowd lessened, she still sat there with a smile on her face and twinkle in her eyes, immersed in her surreal hopes .....the SURREAL wait...
