Raghu and Rani, again returned from school with wet books and torn pages. Everyday it was the same routine during the monsoon season at Kumayun. None of them could spare their books from getting wet . They all carried cloth bags . These were comfortable to be carried on dry days but with the Monsoons approaching , everything turned wet and soggy. There was no way in which , they could visit school . It was the same story for Manu , Isha , Trisha , Pinky , Teerth , Anil, Vimal and many other children of their village.
“ How I wish , we could find a permanent solution to this problem! . Ravi Sir doesn’t like us missing school . But there is no other way out. . “
Ten year old Rani exclaimed ,feeling helpless.
“ Anoo, Sanjana , Mohit and Ramesh have already stopped coming to school , ever since their books got damaged during the heavy rainfall ,the previous week. Have you noticed this Rani . “
Added , twelve year old Raghu before entering their house.
“ Let’s ask Mai ( mother ) if she can buy us new bags by next week, after she sells her handwoven shawls at the fair.”
Rani suggested with a sparkle in her eyes, something that, usually happened when she felt extremely excited. That afternoon they waited eagerly for their mother to return home.
When their mother returned home , they eagerly rushed to her ,to show her their wet books and their tattered state.
“ Mai , can you please buy us a proper school bag or else ,we will all have to drop out from school.”
Komal , looked at their concern filled face and promised them that she would soon buy them their new school bags. Although , she had promised them , she was absolutely clueless ,as to how she could find a solution to their challenge. The waterproof bags that were available were extremely expensive. Komal was well aware that she could not afford them . Like her children , she was also waiting eagerly for a permanent solution. But she did not know, how , when and from where she could find it.
On the next evening , she received a call from her brother , Vidyut Ram . He wanted to visit Komal over the weekend. His seventeen year old son, Shyam also decided to visit Rani and Raghu. Shyam was always eager to do something unique. He was very different from all his friends. He always loved to do something to keep himself busy. Sometimes he would help neighbours carry their heavy shopping bags, or help children with their studies. He had even started a mission to collect waste plastic packets around the lake in his village and encouraged children to send the plastic wastes for recycling around his village. Children , who brought the maximum plastic wastes from home were provided free education too in the local school located in his town.
When Shyam arrived , at Rani and Raghu ‘s house , he realised that they did not look very happy. The incessant rain outside, made him realise that they had not gone to school for the last few days. The crestfallen faces of Raghu and Rani made Shyam come to the conclusion that something was bothering them . So he asked them promptly
“ Please show me your school books . I want to help you with your studies, post lunch “
“ But our books are all damaged. All because of the continuous rainfall over the past one week. Many of our friends have stopped going to school . Its all happening because we don’t have proper rain proof school bags. “
When , Shyam learnt about the challenges faced by Raghu, Rani and many other children in their village, he decided to do something for them and for all the other children living in their village. Before leaving he promised them
“ I will help you all get back to school. I will ensure that, you have good quality bags. For , education is a basic requirement . Every child must get proper books and school bags. I will definitely try to bring a change
Over the next one month Shyam and his friends went around houses in his town, near Almora collecting textile wastes in the forms of left over cloth, old clothes and scraps of clothes. Every door , they knocked they informed that ,they were representing a team named “ Threads of Change “ .
“ Our mission is to collect damaged and discarded clothes , which could easily help someone in need . “
Raghu and Rani went around telling their friends all about Shyam’s promise. All of them waited eagerly for their ‘ Moment To Rejoice ‘.
Shyam had collected around 300 kg worth of textile wastes within a month. Shyam and his friends approached their teachers, who helped them to get connected with N. G.O’s . At the next level ,the scraps that they had collected, were given to the disabled tailors . They helped them turn those textile wastes into durable school bags .
One and half months later , when Shyam and his friends visited Raghu , Rani and all their classmates at Adarsh Vidya Niketan ,a Government ent school and disturbuted about four hundred school bags .
All ,the children including Raghu and Rani were overwhelmed with gratitude. With this unique gift, many children in their school were able to pursue their studies that year and year after year sans the fear of their books getting damaged due to incessant rains.
Shyam and his team have collected over three thousand kgs of textile ,all over the country within a span of over three years and have been distributing, the durable school bags to over 7000 children. ‘Threads of Change ‘ has promoted sustainability besides helping children to return to school.
“ You have indeed given us” A Moment to Rejoice” . Shyam Bhaiyya ( elder brother) , you have taught us the true meaning of happiness. It is enjoyed best ,when shared with others. “
Rani’ s words makes Shyam feel indeed glad. Now Rani , Raghu and some of their friends volunteer, along with Shyam in collecting textile scraps . They also help in distributing school bags as part of “ The Threads of Change “ mission ,to schools which are located in areas affected by heavy rainfall each year.
The children smile radiantly after receiving these school bags. It looks as if ,they have found hidden treasures at the end of the rainbow. Shyam feels that ultimately he has found his source of happiness. During , one of their visits to a government school located in the flood affected village of Assam ,” The Threads of Change “ are greeted with a happy song
“We are not afraid of the heavy rains
For every problem in life ,there is a solution beyond the days of pains
Learn to seek solutions for challenges in your life
Be the cause of somebody’s happiness today
Understand, that each one of us have been blessed with a gift of life
Together ,with our best efforts and a happy spirit ,we will learn to thrive.
Shyam’s eyes are filled with tears of happiness, as he Listens to their song.
Raghu and Rani approach him with a new challenge.
“ It seems ,due to the recent floods the old bridge connecting our village to the school has washed away. The Children of the Government school are facing a lot of challenges . We have to do something do rebuild our bridge or help students reach school on a regular basis.”
Rani’s words aroused a new idea sparked up in Shyam’s mind . He knew it was time to head straight to his next destination .
“ The best way to stay happy is to be busy .”
He had read it somewhere ,and so Shyam keeps following it. Meanwhile, the children have decided to build a special rope way , with wooden cable cars, which will help them to cross the river and reach their school .
Shyam is amazed to observe the determination with which the children start making preparations for the rope way . He realises that they have decided to be their own bearers of the happiness torch . So he watches them with a new found satisfaction. This ,he feels is nothing but “ A Moment To Rejoice. “
