Darted in and out of 30 jobs in various newspapers and magazines for 30 years. Loved the work, hated the office politics, the fragile egos, the disregard for talent. Made scores of friends along the way, who stood by me in times of trouble, which were many. Snatches of books were always playing in my head, but got down to writing That's News to Me only in 2012, during a bout of illness. How do you make up fiction when truth is much stranger? Anything I made up would never stand up to the bizarre realities of the media industry. Finally buckled under and wrote all up all my experiences in fictionalised format, packing in a lot but having to leave out a lot. Kept it light and funny, but a lot of stuff was traumatic.Hope to write up all that one day. Maybe as fact, maybe as fiction.
